In-depth Review of the Greenworks GLM801600 Cordless Electric Mower

Ease of Use

Ever since I started using battery-operated lawn mowers with electric motors, I’ve gladly bid good riddance to the messy oil-based ones! The GLM801600 Cordless Lawn Mower is definitely one of the most ergonomic models from Greenworks. This model comes WITHOUT battery and charger and it works with the Greenworks battery and charger models GBA80200, GBA80400 and GCH8040. If you plan to buy a trimmer, chainsaw or hedger this summer, you can really save some money as you can use the same battery on several Greenworks Pro tools. Here is a quick overview of all the tools you could use with the same batteries.

For this mower you can either use one 4Ah battery or two aAh batteries. You also have the option to purchase the mower with batteries. If you head over to Amazon or Walmart, you’ll see full pricing depending on each battery type. If not, you have to look for model GLM801601 (2 x 2Ah batteries)  or GLM801602 (4Ah battery) at your favorite Online shop.

I needn’t tell you much about assembling the parts, because it only took about 30 minutes (and a couple of beers!). I’d purchased this cordless lawn mower right before Christmas last year, and there was a thick layer of winter weed wreaking havoc on my lawn. But, thanks to its intuitive Smart-Cut Technology, my sprawling lawn (close to 1/4th an acre) was beautifully manicured in less than an hour! The only patches where I’d to run over again were the really frosty ones; so I’d suggest you use this mower when it’s fairly sunny, and the wet patches are minimal. Weighed at around 55 pounds, this mower doesn’t tire you out while pushing it around. Moreover, the handle is cushioned for your convenience, and you can adjust it to three different heights, implying no hand cramps whatsoever!

Cut Quality

Although the cut quality of this  Lawn Mower with 21-inches steel deck is fairly impressive (kudos to the revolutionary Smart-Cut Technology, yet again!), I won’t lie to you about the fact that if your lawn has massively overgrown, tall grass above 4 inches, there are chances of cut grass getting entangled with the blades. Of course, the machine will beep to tell you to stop and untangle.

Personally I detest using bulky, oil-based industrial strength mowers given their sheer amount of noise and emissions, even if they cut taller grass better than this eco-friendly Greenworks mower. So the best solution I’ve found is to spend about an hour tops, every Sunday to prune my lawn, so that it doesn’t over-grow and create a messy cutting situation. Also hey, did I tell you that this amazing machine also mulches if you want it to? Believe me, it’s so much better for your lawn, and easier because you don’t need to empty the bag constantly!

Height Adjustment

Absolutely no hassles in this area folks! With its 7 variable cutting heights ranging from 1.125 inches to 3.75 inches, you can effortlessly adjust the height of the cutting blades while tugging the GreenWorks Pro GLM801600. Unlike commercial contraptions, you don’t need to fumble around with multiple levers. This dream machine has a single lever that you can easily adjust based on the cutting height required, and you needn’t even switch off the machine in between.

Motor Power

If you’ve never used a battery-operated power tool for lawn maintenance, I totally understand your hesitation when it comes to using one. But the good news is that the GreenWorks pro GLM801600 is the best machine to get started with in this regard! I’m really not kidding when I tell you that the performance of this modern EC motor is at par with a traditional gas-based one. I use a 4AH battery, and to tell you in ballpark figures, it easily lasts for an hour at a stretch with no halts in between (which is just right for my weekend lawn mowing expedition!) One of the families next door brought the 2 AH battery instead, which lasts for around 45 minutes after a full-charging session of around 30 minutes only which is comparable to the also fast charging Ego Power Plus LM2001 Cordless Lawn Mower.

Maintenance

Just so you know, the warranty coverage for household use of this power tool from GreenWorks is 4 years. This includes materials, parts and workmanship; since the battery is to be bought separately, the coverage for the battery and charger is limited to one year. The only maintenance issue that I faced once, was that one of the blades got entwined with a huge blade of grass and even after I untwined it, it didn’t function with the same speed. Thankfully, GreenWorks has a toll-free helpline for warranty service, and I called those guys up. They came over and replaced the blade in the next 2 days. No other maintenance issue so far, especially since this machine has been so sturdily built!

Cost Effectiveness

The biggest downer here is that the battery and charger kit is not included with the GreenWorks Pro GLM801600 cordless lawn mower. You have no choice but to purchase it separately or spend a few more bucks and buy the special packages with batteries. My advice to you is that if you have a lawn area smaller than 1/5th of an acre, go for the 80$y, else opt for the 4 AH variant. Nevertheless, the total cost of the mower and the battery (and blower, if you need), is extremely reasonable. With the utter ease of operation, low Decibel levels, zero fumes and an hour-long run time, this lawn mower from GreenWorks provides complete value for money!

PROS:
  • Hassle-free Usage
  • Power-pached Performance
  • Short Charging Time

CONS:
  • Less cut quality on tall grass
  • Battery and Charger Not Included
