In-depth Review of the Fiskars 18 Inch Staysharp Max Reel Mower 6201

Ease Of Use

One of the things that instantly grasps your attention is the unique handle design. Instead of the horizontal handle bar, Fiskars Staysharp max 6201 boasts of a constant loop elongated design with both vertical and horizontal sides allowing you, the user to push it around as you like. With the vertical sides you get better traction through thicker grass and for shorter grass the horizontal handles prove much easier to tackle.

Straight out of the box, the entire unit comes almost pre-assembled with the handle and few other components needing manual assembly, which is easy with a wrench thanks to the clearly mentioned instructions. It takes no more than half an hour to complete.

How it Works

Height Adjustment

Care & Maintenance

Cut Quality

The cut quality is consistent and even. As mentioned before, do not set the height more than a third of your current lawn’s average height and you will get a consistent cut quality. Any higher and you may encounter higher friction with tougher grass strains, which directly hampers the quality. One way to reduce the friction is to tinker with the blade arrangements. This takes a little getting used to but with tougher strains, the blades can be tweaked to cut at a slightly greater angle than usual allowing you to reduce the friction and yet maintain a consistent height. Once mastered, the Fiskars 6201 handle bar height and cutting adjustments take just a moment adjusting to your lawn’s exact needs.

Height Adjustment

Unlike other reel mowers, the Fiskars, 18 Inch Staysharp Max Reel Mower 6201 offers sufficient height adjustment between 1 and 4 inches. A word of caution though, this push mower works best when the cutting height is maintained at no more than 1/3rd the grass height. Set any higher and you may struggle with tougher grass strains owing to its 18 inch cutting deck. As for a clean cut in taller grass, it usually takes no more than two passes to get an even lawn height.

Maintenance

Every component on the Fiskars reel mower is designed for longevity and as such the entire unit ought to last a long time. At most, you may have to periodically sharpen the blades but from what customers say, this is usually once a year task. Oiling the joints, periodic cleaning and tightening of nuts and bolts is all the maintenance this push mower demands.

Cost Effectiveness

Sturdy in construction, packed with technology that helps rather than hinders, the Fiskars 6201 is a reel mower designed to be useful and simple. Pricing of this mower also happens to be on the lower end of the spectrum with competing brands and models boasting less features priced similarly. Is it a worthwhile investment for your lawn? If you have a small to moderate sized lawn and hardly any hilly regions, then this is the walk-behind mower to get.

Enjoy cutting my grass without the smell of gasoline and the noise.

+ PROS: -Much lighter than a gas mower, so easier to push on inclines - Adjustable handle to suit your height - No Noise - Transports easily (handle quickly detaches using 2 cotter pins)
    - CONS: - Very difficult to cut overgrown grass - Only cuts when moving forward, takes longer to cut around obstacles than it would with gas/electric mower - Difficult to cut wet grass.

I am not really new to reel mowers, at least for the past year and a half. I bought this one after I got totally tired of the smaller ones I have used over the past couple of years. Though a little bit expensive but the quality is totally worth it. It is very easy to move around and to maneuver and it does real magic with the short grasses. The major issues I have with this machine is that it doesn’t really provide the 18″ width I badly want. The problem with the mowing area actually bothers my sons but I am still able to maneuver and get a better job doing it. I think it is easier to use as compared to most of the other ones I used previously.

+ PROS: Noiseless, low fuel consumption, fume-less, quite easy to move about
    - CONS: Heavy weight, small cutting radius

For the past couple of months that I have had the opportunity of using this mower, I think I am quite impressed by what I paid good money for. I no longer have to worry about the fumes and the deafening noise that accompanied the ones I used before now, I can now decide to cut grasses and listen to music without having to break my ear drums. I can even make a phone call while working with this mower and my neighbours can have their well-deserved weekend without my mower’s interruption. One lovely trick with this mower is that it can adjust between 1″ to 4″ this gives me the opportunity to cut down my fescue at 3-3.5″ which is better than what any of my older mowers could do. This mower is a bit heavy by the way, a massive 35lbs and this makes it very difficult to move most of the time, especially when the grasses are a bit tall.
The flywheel and the extra heft lets you to simply push it through grass. It doesn’t cut as effectively as the gas mower, you may need to have a few stray blades that didn’t get clipped, but it cuts the blades so neatly that its almost like it has been cut with a pair of scissors. I’m astonished at how well it cuts without stressing the grass. My old mower is for sale on craigslist and I don’t plan on ever owning another gas mower. My yard is about 1/4 acre with a steep hill in the back yard and it only takes 10 minutes more to cut using this mower than my old gas mower. The only disadvantage is that the mower can’t handle overgrown grass well. You will have to set it to its highest setting.

I had a manual, reel mower in my possession years ago and it was horrible. Tall, fine grass and seed shoots would simply be pushed over and I would have to spend even longer with a trimmer cutting them down. For the past few years I had a lawn service but the lawn service was killing my lawn so I decided to buy a mower again. A little research led me to the Fiskars Momentum .It suffers from many of the same issues of other manual reel movers but Fiskars’ has innovated a few characteristics that make this the best in class.

+ PROS: - Adjustable up to 4" so will work with Bermuda grasses - Cuts very close to edges and walls if you have easy access - Trim under trees and odd corners if grass are not too tall - Heavy duty build - Easy to clean - Good for environment, no gas - Ejects clippings forward for extra mulching
    - CONS: - A bit heavy to transfer to another location

I ordered this Fiskars mower, and even with the shipping costs to Australia, it has been worth every cent. I love this mower.
I have a 1 acre lawn area on my farm, which includes several hilly and steep inclines. I used to use a powered self-propelled petrol mower. When the grass was thick it took over 3 hours, and the grass would constantly clog the underside of the mower, especially when it was thick and wet.
It still takes me 3 hours to do the 1 acre. On the flat and downhill sections it is as easy to push as the powered mower. On the uphill bits, it is hard work. I’m a fit guy, almost 50 years old, and this gives me a great workout.
Best of all, it will cut long, wet grass without clogging. That means I can do the lawn in the cool of the morning even with the grass wet from dew. The power mower couldn’t do that, and I would have to wait till the sun dried the lawn up, in the hotter part of the day

The quality of the cut depends on how often you mow. If you leave it too long until the grass is high, a power mower will give you a cleaner, neater cut, including seed stalks. The Fiskars mower will not do as neat a job on really long grass. However, if you mow more frequently, the Fiskars will be easier to push and gives very clean cut. Watching the cut grass spew out from the front is very satisfying.

It does need a bit of tuning to get it just right. Requires just a spanner, and a sheet of paper to test the cut. Easy.

+ PROS: Saves gas Saves time (if factor in buying fuel, filling, starting) Pull it out any time for a quick start Almost silent(not noisy at all) Good workout Very satisfying, almost fun Should last forever(very durable), as the blade doesn’t have contact with the cutters
    - CONS: None

    No doubt on my choice.

+ PROS: 1) Do you know its height? It is 4 inches long. 2) Easier to push on inclined planes as compared to gas mowers as it is light weighted. 3) It doesn’t make noise, hence not annoy my neighbors.
    - CONS: 1) It is not good to go with wet grass. 2) If you are purchasing it to clean your weeds than don’t buy it as it doesn’t cut weeds. But yeah it works well on grass.
